Pension and Life Certificates

Life certificates are notarized free of charge for pensioners who are receiving their National Insurance Scheme (NIS) pensions, Government service or Sugar estate pensions. The pensioner must bring their passports or other photo identification. Forms are available at the Consulate.

Pensions are not remitted overseas directly by NIS or Government but can be paid into to a bank account that has the pensioner’s name on it in Guyana or to an authorized person. The pensioner is responsible for requesting transfer of the funds from Guyana.

Note: Government Old Age pension is not paid to pensioners who do not reside in Guyana.

Congratulations.  You are now a pensioner of the National Insurance Scheme.  As a pensioner it is your responsibility to ensure that you submit your life certificate in a timely manner to facilitate the processing of future pension payments.

Submission of Life Certificate

Pensioners residing overseas are required to submit a life certificate every three months, or at least once per year.

This certificate must be signed by a Notary Public or an Officer of the Guyanese Consulate in the country in which the pensioner resides.  The official stamp of the person attesting to the fact of the pensioner being alive must be affixed.

Pensions can be obtained by any of the following methods:

(i)                  Six monthly vouchers issued by NIS in a pension order book which have a validity period of six (6) months each.

(ii)                Direct deposit to the commercial bank in Guyana where the local/overseas pensioner has an active account.

(iii)               Monthly/periodic vouchers issued to a local representative of a pensioner who resides overseas.

(iv)              Monthly/periodic vouchers issued to a representative of a pensioner who resides in Guyana but is unable to uplift his/her pension due to illness.

The relevant forms to authorize either a local representative or bank to transact business with NIS on the pensioner’s behalf (P1, P3A, P3B or P3C) can be printed out below, uplifted from the nearest NIS Office to where you live or from the NIS website:

You should notify NIS of any changes made to your name, address or the person/bank you have nominated to act on your behalf.
